by

D Hemachandra Rao

2nd  November 2019, Saturday 5:30 PM at Arkay Convention Center,146/3 R.H.Road, OMS Lakshana (Above Shah Electronics), Mylapore, Chennai
About the Topic

The talk introduces our rich maritime heritage dating back to 2500 BC.  Maritime heritage refers to any watercraft vehicles such as catamarans, boats, and ships that ply over rivers, lakes, and seas.  We find frescoes and sculptures depicting these from Mohenjo-Daro to Alagankulam on rock art, cave paintings, monuments, and temples.  We will also look at deities like Mahisasuramadhini seated on the boats and other well-decorated watercrafts.

About the speaker

D Hemachandra Rao was born in Ernakulam, Kochi, in 1939.  He has been a resident of Madras since 1941. Having obtained his early education and undergraduation in Madras, he pursued civil engineering at the Birla Institute of Technology, Ranchi.

At a young age, he got interested in stamp collecting and started specializing in stamps with ships and later in lighthouses as well.

His early professional life saw him serving in two famous firms – Gannon Dunkley & co and M/S Tarapore of Madras. From 1984, he worked in construction as a consultant architect.

He retired in 2001 and undertook full-time research on the beautiful arch bridges of Madras, the lighthouses of Madras and the famous man-made Buckingham Canal. He has traveled the whole length of the Buckingham Canal and visited many lighthouses in India.

Founder of Madras Heritage Lovers’ Forum, Hemachandra Rao has converted his house in Chennai into a Maritime Heritage Museum. The museum among others displays huge collection of boat replicas, such as brass boats, popular Kerala boathouses, and a 16-ft wooden boat, which is believed to be a replica of one of the boats that plied the Buckingham Canal in the 1870s. He has conducted many heritage walks, especially during annual Madras Day celebrations.
