3rd November 2018, Saturday 5:30 PM at Arkay Convention Center,
146/3 R.H.Road, OMS Lakshana (Above Shah Electronics), Mylapore, Chennai

About the Topic
Inscriptions stones (Shila Shaasanas) in the Bengaluru area are original documentation of the people of that region, their culture, religion, and language. These stones conjure up vivid pictures of the historic and social fabric of the past, with linguistic plurality, construction of lakes, tax practices, donations, grants, governance et al making up their warp and weft. Rampant urbanization in Bengaluru has led to the destruction of a majority of the 150 stones in the old ‘Bangalore’ region, painstakingly documented by B.L. Rice and others between 1894 and 1905 and captured remarkably in the twelve-volume ‘Epigraphia Carnatica’ series.
The talk will focus on “Inscription Stones Of Bangalore” (Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/inscriptionstones & Twitter: @inscriptionblr) a citizen activism project to raise awareness and protect ancient inscription stones found in the Bengaluru region. The project has been using technology (social media, mapping, 3D scanning, 3D printing, OCR) to protect preserve & restore the dignity of the last few remaining ‘Inscription Stones Of Bangalore’. One of its passionately ambitious projects is to build a Mandapa designed in ‘Ganga’ style to house the oldest known inscription of Bengaluru, dating back to 750 CE, the “Kittiah Veeragallu” (Kittiah Herostone) of Hebbal, through crowd-funding from all strata of the society including the local community, a path-breaking attempt in responsible heritage activism.

Coinages of Pandya Country
Sangam Period to 18th Century CE

The ancient Pandya country comprises of modern-day districts of Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Tirunelvelli, Nagerkovil, few parts of Karur and Pudukottai.

Many rulers & dynasties held sway over the Pandya country. Foremost among them is the ancient Sangam-fame Pandyan dynasty. Later Pandyas issued coins bearing legends primarily in Tamil. There were other kings and dynasties too - Madurai Sultans, Maavali Vanathirayan Dynasty, Vijayanagar Kings, Nayaks, Sethupathi Rajas, Tippu Sultan, Arcot Nawabs and several feudatory kings.
The coins bear legends in myriad of languages - Tamil, Arabic, Persian, Telugu, to name a few. The talk will touch upon several not so well-known aspects of those coins and their role in reconstruction or re-telling of glorious history of a hallowed land the Pandya country is.

Abdul Rasul, Delivery Head in an IT company, has been fascinated with coins and stamps from his childhood. His singular passion helped him to get in to the Guinness Book of World Records for his “Largest collection of Stamps Featuring Mosques”. He also earned ‘Naanaya Kalaignar’ title from “International Institute of Tamil Studies” and several other awards. Madras Coin Society awarded him first Prize for his “Coins of Tamilnadu - 3rd BC to 1836 AD”.  He has also published a book on Coins of Madurai Sultanate, co-written with Mr. Arumuga Seetharaman, in June 2018. Rasul now specialises in collecting ‘Tamil Legend’ Coins, ‘Islamic Coins’ around the world, and coins of Indian Sultanates, Arcot Nawabs, Tippu Sultan, Madurai Nayaks etc,

Amaravati - a Talk and a Walk, R. Gopu, 4th Aug 2018

Tamil Heritage Trust
as a part of MADRAS DAY celebrations
presents
Amaravati - a Talk and a Walk
by
R Gopu
4th August 2018, Saturday 5:30 PM at Arkay Convention Center,
146/3 R.H.Road, OMS Lakshana (Above Shah Electronics), Mylapore, Chennai

The talk is followed by a Walk in Amaravati Gallery, Egmore Museum, Chennai on 5th August 2018 at 11 AM.

About the topic

The Amaravati gallery is one of the great treasures of the Madras Museum in Egmore. Sculptures, pillars, and fragments of a Buddhist stupa dating back to the second century BC, from an abandoned city of the Satavahana era, were brought to this museum in the middle of the nineteenth century, perhaps saving them from destruction and misuse. It is a mystery, that the Amaravati gallery, whose sculptural splendour is equal merit to Ajanta, in the middle of a massive city, easy to behold and easier to access, does not draw far bigger crowds. Perhaps the unfamiliarity of its themes and seemingly confusing compositions are a challenge to the lay public and connoisseur alike.

The art of Amaravati is not only astounding; it is of great artistic, religious, historical, epigraphical, and aesthetic value. It is the earliest lithic work any significance in the southern part of the Indian peninsula. Even this earliest attempt exhibits an astounding creative maturity and represents the perfection of the art of sculpture. The panels are among the finest examples of Buddhist art, few remains of which are still to be found in South India.

The sculptor possessed masterly knowledge of composition and an intuitive sense of balance and sequencing. For the first time, several techniques of artistic rendering such as lighter and deeper etching, differentiated planes, perspective and distance, and foreshortening are successfully introduced.

It is not possible to describe the variety of the panels or the various aspects listed above, in a single lecture. Or even a couple of hours of strolling through the gallery. But an introduction to its history and a brief explanation of a few selected panels may help.

Hence this talk at Tamil Heritage Trust and walk with the cooperation of the Madras Museum.

About the speaker
