Abstract:

Ananda Rangapillai's autobiography is one of the foremost in India.  From 1736 to 1761 he has very interestingly documented personal and public events every day in his diary.  He was born in Chennai in 1709, and moved to Pondicherry when he was 10 years old, where his father was involved in business and later became a dubhashi to a French Governor.  Ananda Rangapillai has documented politcs, social life, business events, war, religious events, natural phenomenon, etc.  In 1904, his diary was translated in English in 10 volumes.  In 1924, வ.வே.சு. ஐயர் published portions of his diary in Balabharathi Magazine.  From 1948 to 2005, Pondichery Govt., has released 12 volumes of his autobiography in tamil.

About the Speaker:  Sa. Kandasami won the Sahitya Academy Award for the Novel விசாரணை கமிஷன் in 1998.  He is a prolific writer who has been writing short stories, novels, and essays for over 50 years.  He has written 9 novels and 150 short stories.  His most important work is சாயாவனம்.  He has won both Kalaimamani and Tamil Nadu Government Awards.  He was born in Myiladuthurai in 1940 and is living in Chennai since 1954.
